Transform Your Basement Into The Sweet Suite

Having a suite in our basement may not be something many homeowners lean toward when they think remodeling, but if you have aging parents, post-secondary attending teenagers or have friends visiting several times a year, creating a guest retreat may be the perfect use of the space.

The Apartment

Living on campus, or even sharing an apartment with friends, can be an expensive endeavor for children leaving the nest. Many parents, therefore, turn to their own home to create a space for their post-secondary-attending teen, and basements are the ideal place to put them. If you plan on renting afterward, be sure it is legal (We know Calgary’s by laws and we can help secure the development permit). Make sure you also comply with fire-code regulations, either way,  to ensure your child’s and future tenant’s safety.

The Guest Retreat

Think of your favorite hotel stay. Why was it perfect? Did it have a comfortable sitting area, a fireplace to cozy up to, a bed-and-bathroom en-suite for private, romantic evenings? Now, look at your basement and make it happen. The only trouble with having a stunning guest retreat is that they may not want to leave!

The In-Law Suite

Converting a basement into an in-law suite is a great way to welcome extended  family into your home, while giving them their own space. When designing, be sure to have a floor plan that is simple: kitchenette, dining or breakfast nook, living room, bedroom and bathroom. Incorporate safety features, such as bars in the shower or tiles with grips to prevent falls. Flooring should be smooth, in the event the in-laws require walkers or wheelchairs, and door frames should be widened for the same reason.

The Spa Retreat

When transforming your basement into a spa, you may start with the bathroom but it doesn’t end there. Sure, you can add rainfall shower heads, soaker or jetted tubs and towel racks stuffed with plush, soft bath sheets, but to create a complete spa retreat, think big. Open your space up and extend that tone — think sunken pools and tubs, deck chairs, heated floors, wall-mount fireplace, ambient lighting, opaque curtains and subdued wall and accent colors.
